Shirley Mae Knox Sawyer, 80, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016. She was born March 6, 1936, to the late Georgia Lamb Knox and Arthur T. Knox Sr. in Princess Anne County.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Johnson and Arthur T. Knox Jr.
She attended Union Kempsville Training School and also took night classes at Booker T. Washington High School. She worked as a certified nursing assistant for over 25 years. Shirley enjoyed reading, writing poetry, singing and visiting her grandchildren.
She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Richard E. Sawyer Sr.; five children, Richard Jr., Christopher, Phillip, Robin and Mia; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 15, at Mt. Zion AME Church. Interment will follow in Colonial Grove Memorial Park.
