Robert Henry Freeman Sr., 94, passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 2016.
Robert was a native and lifelong resident of York County and attended Emmaus Baptist Church as a young boy. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, assigned to the 780th Engineers. He served in the battles of Central Burma and India as well as the Pacific Theater, and was the recipient of two bronze service stars and a Good Conduct Medal. After the war, Robert worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker. He enjoyed woodworking, farming, fishing and riding his tractor.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Nannie Wade; and brothers, Delma and David Freeman. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of more than 74 years, Bertha Lee Freeman; his children, Robert Henry Freeman (Robin) of Gloucester, Pauline Conwell of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Eugene Freeman (Donna) of Poquoson, Harold R Freeman of Poquoson and William H. Freeman of Yorktown; and eight grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at Amory Funeral Home, Grafton. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, in Veterans Memorial Gardens, Hampton.
