Raymond Louis Cogswell, 89, went to be with his Lord Sunday, February 28, 2016. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late James W. and Myrtle F. Cogswell.
Ray graduated from George Washington University. He retired from Stanford Paper Company after 41 years. He was longtime resident of New Carrollton, Md. In retirement, he resided in Georgetown, Del., and Virginia Beach.
Ray is survived by his wife of 64 years, Betty J. Cogswell; daughter, Catherine C. Borchers (Wayne); and his grandchildren, Kelsey and Connor Borchers, all of Virginia Beach.
Ray was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the European theater as a rifleman with the 4th Infantry Division, where he earned a Bronze Star. He was a lifelong Redskins fan and season ticket holder for 60 years. Ray tended the gardens of St. James Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill for 45 years with his cousin, Harry Jones. It was truly a labor of faith and love.
His family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and caregivers from Virginia Beach General Hospital, Seaside, AIL and Home Instead. We are most grateful to Shay, Shaina and Merry who have kept things running smoothly during this most difficult time.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 12, at Eastern Shore Chapel. Inurnment will take place in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
