Carol Briggs Ten Broeck, longtime resident of Williamsburg, passed away at age 78 on Friday, February 26, 2016, following a brief illness.
Born in Mansfield, Mass., on March 14, 1937, Carol was the daughter of the late Harry Briggs and Doris Warren Briggs. Carol attended Brown University and also Boston University, where she received a B.A. in journalism. Carol worked in the communications department at the College of William & Mary, and was responsible for utilizing antiques and objects of historical significance to decorate the president’s residence, which served as a venue for a variety of official functions. She was also a successful Realtor for over 30 years.
In addition to being a longtime parishioner of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, Carol was an active member of the Kingsmill community, with many friends and interests. She belonged to numerous social organizations and enjoyed volunteering. Carol was a master gardner, an avid traveler and loved the water.
Carol was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 52 years, Peter Morris Ten Broeck. She is survived by a son, Robertson Ten Broeck, and his wife, Barbara Ten Broeck, of Hollywood, Md.; and a daughter, Margo Calkin of Arlington. In addition, she leaves four grandchildren, Angelica Ten Broeck Watts, and her husband, Jacob Watts, of Saluda, twins, Zachary and Schuylar Ten Broeck of Williamsburg and Lian Calkin of Arlington; and a great-granddaughter, Alaina Ten Broeck of Saluda. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Dr. Warren Briggs of Marion, Mass.; nephews, Rolf Briggs of Holliston, Mass., Wyman Briggs of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and Hunter Ten Broeck of Albuquerque, N.M.; as well as nieces, Monica Briggs of Jamaica Plain, Mass., Diane Hulburt of Mocksville, N.C., and Katrina McIntyre of St. Louis Park, Minn.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 12, at Bruton Parish Episcopal Church, 201 Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg, followed by a reception at the Parish House, 331 Duke of Gloucester St., Williamsburg.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels, P.O. Box 709, Williamsburg, VA 23187, or to a favorite charity.
