Joseph M. Sizoo, a Williamsburg resident since 1976, died suddenly on Oct. 17, 2015, at the age of 95.
He was born in Somerville, New Jersey on June 20, 1920, son of the late Rev. Dr. Joseph R. Sizoo and Florence M. Sizoo.
His education at Williams College was interrupted by service in WWII from 1941 to 1946 in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He graduated from George Washington University in Washington D.C. and served as a special agent in the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 1950 to retirement in 1975.
He was assigned to the Domestic Intelligence Division at FBI Headquarters and was involved in research, speaking and the preparation of documents for internal use as well as for government-wide distribution in security matters.
In retirement, he and his family moved to Williamsburg where he worked in banking and attended Williamsburg United Methodist Church, serving as a property maintenance coordinator for a number of years. He spent summers at a vacation home in the Thousand Islands area of New York.
He is survived by his devoted and beloved wife of 58 years, Barbara R. Sizoo; a son, J. Richard Sizoo, of Santa Rosa, California; two daughters, Jennifer Sizoo and her husband Richard Chilcoat, of Hopewell, New Jersey and Hilary J. S. Tyls and her husband Charles Tyls, of Bedford, New Hampshire; eight grandchildren, Ashley Shue, J.R., Will and Lauren Sizoo, Wyatt and Hannah Chilcoat and Cortlund and Addison Tyls; and brother, William M. Sizoo, of Chaumont, New York.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, 500 Jamestown Road. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington at a later date, in addition to a celebration of his life.
Remembrances may be made to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church or to a charity of choice.
