Carolyn Ellis Rhoads, 74, created figurative wooden sculptures depicting folk heroes

Carolyn Ellis Rhoads, of Yorktown, died Oct. 14, 2015, at her home overlooking Wormley Creek. She was 74.

She was a native of Tidewater and graduated from York High School in 1959 and attended both Mary Washington College and what is now Virginia Commonwealth University to study fine art.

She created figurative wooden sculptures depicting folk heroes, contemporary life and nature, which were/are exhibited locally and nationally. In the last 15 years her membership at Grace Church has led her subject matter to the divine, a number of her crosses are on view in the collection there.

Carolyn was preceded in death by her father, Macon Carmichael Ellis.

She is survived by her mother, Margaret Ellis; sister, Mary Anne Newton and her daughter, Ashley Heald; father of her children, Webb Rhoads (married 1963 to 1979); and children, Katherine Rhoads and Sterling Rhoads and his children, Webster Rhoads and Adele Rhoads.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2015, at Grace Church with reception to follow. The Rev. Carleton Bakkum will officiate.
