Ruth Aspen Bidwell, 90, painted exhibit backdrops for the Academy of Natural Sciences

Ruth Aspen Bidwell, of Williamsburg, died peacefully on Aug. 17, 2015, at the age of 90.

Ruth was born in Philadelphia to Alfred and Edna Aspen. She attended high schools in Philadelphia and Rochester, New York. She went on to Hood College and Moore College of Art. Ruth worked as an artist painting exhibit backdrops at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia. During this time, she participated in archery, rifle and spelunking clubs. She met and married John Bidwell of Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, in 1955. They had a daughter in 1959.

In addition to being a homemaker, she was involved in special interest groups such as the garden club, Presbyterian Women’s Circle, book clubs and The League Of Women Voters. She continued her artistic endeavors by designing cover art for various publications on a volunteer basis.

Ruth and John relocated to Williamsburg more than 20 years ago, living in Kingsmill, Williamsburg Landing and finally Windsor Meade. Ruth was an avid reader, loved to travel and take cruises with John and enjoyed antiques and bird watching. She was sweet lady with gentle sense of humor.

Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years and leaves behind their only child, daughter Laura, of Springfield.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at Windsor Meade in Williamsburg. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, at Alexandria Presbyterian Cemetery in Alexandria, Pennsylvania with the Rev. Ernest Walls officiating.
