Crews have completed work Thursday on improvements on the intersection of Centerville Road (Route 614) and News Road (Route 613) in James City County ahead of schedule and under budget, VDOT officials said.

Improvements to the intersection are designed to reduce vehicle congestion and increase motorist and cyclist safety, allowing drivers to enter and exit the intersection with more visibility. New lane features also ensure efficient traffic flow at the intersection where there is a projected growth in vehicle volume, according to a news release from VDOT.

Improvements include:

  • Addition of traffic signal at intersection.
  • Widening to create three (3) new dedicated turn lanes:
  1. Left turn lane southbound from Centerville Road onto News Road.
  2. Right turn lane northbound from Centerville Road onto News Road.
  3. Right turn lane westbound from News Road onto Centerville Road.
  • Addition of retaining wall on southeast corner of Centerville Road to improve sight distance for motorists entering the intersection.
  • Delineated bicycle lane and pavement markings along Centerville Road.
  • Improved curbing and drainage throughout the project area.
  • Comprehensive landscaping for erosion control and intersection aesthetics.

VDOT contractor Henry S. Branscome, LLC started construction on the $1.9 million construction project in January 2020 and finished 15 days earlier than the scheduled contract completion date and under budget, officials said.
