Pregnant woman killed in Thursday shooting

NEWPORT NEWS — A 20-year-old pregnant woman was shot and killed early Thursday. A man, 23, who was with the woman in a vehicle, also was injured in the shooting.

Police said a 21-month-old girl who was also in the vehicle was not hurt but was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated.

The woman was identified as Tiara Jefferson of Hampton. She was 15 weeks pregnant.

Police have not identified the man but said he’s from Newport News.

Officers converged in the area of 27th Street and Madison Avenue at 2:22 a.m., shortly after dispatchers fielded a call about a shooting.

There, police found the vehicle Jefferson, the man and the 21-month-old girl were in. Authorities said the vehicle crashed near a tree.

All three occupants of the vehicle were taken to the hospital. The woman died a short time later.

The man, police said, suffered gunshot wounds that are non-life-threatening.

According to the report received by police, the trio were driving down the 700 block of 27th Street “when they were shot by an unknown subject.”

No other information was immediately released.

Authorities are asking anyone with information about the shooting to call the Crime Line at 888-LOCK-U-UP.
