Gas prices continue to climb in Hampton Roads

The temperature is rising in Virginia — but so are the gasoline prices.

Gas prices in Virginia have continued to increase over the last week, resulting in an average price of $2.52 per gallon in Hampton Roads, according to AAA Tidewater.

The average gas price for the state is $2.53, 1 cent higher than Hampton Roads.

Virginia has not seen gas prices this high since July 2015, AAA Tidewater said. The average cost is 18 cents more than it was one month ago and 30 cents more than a year ago.

Despite the increase, the average cost for a gallon of gas in Virginia still sits nearly 20 cents lower than the national average, which hovered at $2.71 on Monday. The price is the highest the nation has seen in nearly three years.

Only 27 percent of gas stations are selling fuel for less than $2.50 per gallon, AAA Tidewater said.

Nationally, gas prices are expected to continue to climb over the coming months, AAA Tidewater said.

Drivers can find current gas prices on AAA’s mobile app.
