Following a spate of illnesses, an Indiana farm is voluntarily recalling eggs that were sold in Virginia due to potential Salmonella contamination.

According to the federal Food and Drug Administration website, Rose Acre Farms in Seymour, Ind., is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with salmonella braenderup, “an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.”

“Healthy individuals infected with salmonella braenderup can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain,” the website states. “In rare circumstances, infection… can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.”

As of Friday, the FDA states there have been 22 reported illnesses on the East Coast traced back to a farm in Hyde County, N.C. The FDA notes that the farm produces 2.3 million eggs per day and has a USDA inspector on site daily.

The recalled eggs were sold not only in Virginia, but in Colorado, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, North Carolina, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery. Many of the eggs were sold in Food Lions stores.

The affected eggs are from plant number P-1065. The Julian date — or lot codes — have a range of 011 through date of 102 printed on either the side portion or the principal side of the carton or package. They were sold under the Waffle House, Food Lion, Country Day Break, Great Value, Crystal Farms, Sunshine Farms, Coburn Farms and Glenview USDA brands.

A full list of affected eggs is listed on the FDA’s food recall website.

Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are being told to immediately stop using the agges. They should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund.

Consumers with questions may contact the company at 855-215-5730 between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST.
