VIRGINIA BEACH — The city’s Historic Preservation Commission is accepting research grant applications for projects with a focus on all of the local history in the city, former Princess Anne County and other related historic and prehistoric eras.
The Research Grant Program is looking to encourage people to learn and become more aware of persons, places and events that are significant to the city’s history.
The research projects themselves must result in a tangible product, like a written report or historic marker, city officials said.
The application window is open until Aug. 15.

Grant funding awarded for the program will be for costs directly related to the research and production of the final product, officials said.
The minimum grant project award will be $500 and the maximum grant project award will be $2,500.
The total available funding for all grants this fiscal year is $10,000.
People eligible to apply for the program funding are:
- Undergraduate and graduate students attending accredited colleges and universities in Virginia.
- Social Studies/American History teachers/professors in schools, colleges or universities in Virginia.
- Professionals employed in museums, libraries, historical societies and similar organizations in Virginia.
- Virginia residents, over the age of 18, demonstrating historical research ability.
- Property owners of buildings listed on the Virginia Beach Historical Register.
Nine grants were awarded last year ranging from $581 to $2,250, according to the city.
All applications must include a project sponsor who agrees to review and approve the project final report or product.
The sponsor must be identified in the application and must sign the application.
