VIRGINIA BEACH — Early childhood educators will have the opportunity to attend an award-winning education program that will help them promote environmental stewardship and educate the children they work with.
The program, Project Learning Tree, will be on June 28 at the Brock Environmental Center.
It’s a workshop for those who teach pre-K through first grade, whether it’s in a school, a childcare center, or for those who teach homeschoolers.
“We’ll be showcasing 6-10 activities from the book in a fun hands-on way, giving the teachers a chance to see how the activities are conducted and ways that they can modify them for their students,” said Jody Ullmann, Pearl School/Education coordinator for Lynnhaven River NOW. “They will also be given a lot of the materials to take back to the classroom with them. In addition, we will be sharing expertise and tips that make it easier to take younger children outdoors.”
The Project Learning Tree curriculum was designed for K-8th grade teachers. Ullmann said each book is filled with great information and activities that help teachers and children explore the natural world and our place in it. A version for Early Childhood Educators was recently released.
Ullmann said activities will include: a shape walk; dancing with leaves; making a tree book; painting with tree parts; smell of flowers; tree art; pounding leaves; and exploring what lives in a tree
In order to get the book, teachers must attend a workshop from a trained facilitator.
She said the cost is $10 and that spaces are still available for the workshop. It runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and attendees will need to bring a lunch.
