A Virginia Beach man has pleaded guilty to robbing a string of banks in Virginia and North Carolina, including some in Williamsburg.
Russell Carter, 50, robbed 11 banks spanning from Durham, North Carolina, to Richmond, Fredericksburg and Charlottesville, Virginia, according to a U.S. Department of Justice news release.
He also attempted to rob a 12th bank in Henrico, but fled the scene when he noticed “attention” from the tellers, according to court documents filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia
In all robberies, Carter approached the bank teller and handed them a note demanding money and claiming he had a gun.
The robbery in Williamsburg occurred on Nov. 6, according to documents.
Carter entered the Chesapeake Bank, located at 6619 Richmond Road, and held up a note to the bank teller, which said he had a gun and demanded cash in large bills with no dye packs.
The teller gave him $2,241, and Carter fled the scene on foot.
Carter pleaded guilty to bank robbery Tuesday and faces up to 40 years in prison.
He is scheduled for sentencing June 19.
The investigation into Carter’s robberies was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigations Richmond’s Central Virginia Violent Crimes Task Force.
