NWS: Spring is here, but more snow Wednesday

Tuesday may be the first day of spring, but winter isn’t over quite yet.

The Southside could expect up to an inch of snow Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Orrock.

“We’re definitely going to get snow, but forecasting how much it’s going to stick, that’s what gets tricky,” Orrock said.

The snow will be the second storm system to hit this area of Virginia in two days, Orrock said. The first storm consists of rain and winds gusting up to 25 mph all day Tuesday.

Temperatures Tuesday will be in the mid-40s.

But come Wednesday, temperatures will drop into the low to mid-30s — just above freezing, Orrock said.

Snow will start falling in the afternoon. Meteorologists expect snow could accumulate up to an inch.

The total snowfall depends on the rate the flakes fall, Orrock said. If the snow falls quickly, it could be like last week’s storm and leave an inch of heavy, wet snow on the trees and roads.

Snow will taper off around 10 p.m. or 11 p.m. Wednesday night, and temperatures will hover above freezing.

“The stuff will disappear fairly quickly, and the morning commute will probably be okay,” Orrock said.

“March can a very odd month for weather,” he added.
