The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program of Williamsburg is offering free tax assistance before filing day.

The service will be offered four times a week, from 1:30-5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday, and from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays at 306 South Henry Street.

The last day for tax help will be on April 17, which is the last day for filing federal tax forms.

“We’ll generally help people whose incomes are $54,000 or less to prepare their federal and state income tax returns and provide free electronic filing,” said Dave Lehnertz, a VITA representative.

IRS-certified volunteers will be on hand to perform the filing.

Taxpayers seeking assistance must have photo identification and a social security card or taxpayer identification numbers for themselves, spouses and dependents, according to a news release from VITA.

They should also bring their W-2 and 1099 forms, a copy of last year’s return and any other information concerning their income and expenses in 2017.

For joint e-filed returns, both spouses must be present to sign the required tax forms.
