NORFOLK — An 18-year-old criminal justice major and football player at Norfolk State University was the victim of a homicide Friday evening.
According to a city news alert, police were dispatched to the 800 block of Hayes Street for a gunshot disturbance shortly after 6 p.m. Friday.
When the officers arrived, they found 18-year-old Nicholas Jerome Ackies, of Richmond, suffering from a gunshot wound inside of an apartment. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene, the alert stated.
Ackies was a freshman criminal justice major and a defensive lineman for the NSU Football team, according to a university news release.
“This is such a tragic situation,” NSU Athletics Director Marty L. Miller said in a statement. “Our prayers are with Nick’s family during this very difficult time. He will be dearly missed by the entire Norfolk State University family.”
During the course of the preliminary investigation, detectives identified 22-year-old Jaquan Markee Anderson as a suspect, a Norfolk police news alert stated.
Anderson, last known to reside in the 800 block of Hayes Street, was taken into custody without incident and charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, read the alert.
Anderson remains incarcerated without bond in the Norfolk City Jail.
