Homicide investigation underway after Hayes Street shooting

NORFOLK — A deadly shooting on Hayes Street on Friday evening has been classified a homicide by Norfolk police.

According to a city news alert, police were dispatched to the 800 block of Hayes Street for a gunshot disturbance shortly after 6 p.m. Friday.

When the officers arrived, they found a man suffering from a gunshot wound inside of an apartment. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene, the alert stated.

“His death has been classified as an active homicide investigation,” read the alert.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner has yet to officially determine the cause of death. The identity of the victim will not be released until the family has been notified.
