A Newport News woman died single-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 East near the Camp Peary exit Monday morning.
Mary Barber, 66, of Newport News, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Virginia State Police responded to a report of a crash near mile marker 236 in York County around 9:45 a.m.
Barber was driving a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe in the left lane of I-64 east – between the Lightfoot and Camp Peary exits – when she attempted to make a right lane change, Sgt. Michelle Anaya said in a news release. Noticing another car was in the right lane, Barber over-corrected, ran off the median and struck a tree head-on.
She was not wearing a seat belt. Neither alcohol nor speed are considered factors in the crash.
