To celebrate the long-awaited Interstate 64 widening project that will begin its first phase later this month, Gov. Terry McAuliffe will be on the Peninsula today for a ceremonial groundbreaking.
McAuliffe will speak at the Virginia Department of Transportation ceremony, scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m today on Chatham Trail in Newport News.
State Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Lane, VDOT Commissioner Charles A. Kilpatrick and VDOT Hampton Roads District Commissioner James Utterback will stand alongside McAuliffe for the groundbreaking.
The first phase of the widening project – projected to cost about $122 million – will add one lane and one shoulder in each direction for the 5.6 miles between Jefferson Avenue in Newport News (exit 255) and Route 143 in York County (exit 247), which should be completed by December 2017.
About 100,000 vehicles travel this portion of the interstate each day.
After three phases, the widening will stretch to the second Route 199 interchange in York County (exit 234).
