A 27-year-old Newport News man was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison Friday for several gang-related incidents, including shooting at a rival gang member’s home in James City County in December 2008.
Marcellus Williams, who goes by “Math,” “P-Shooter” and “Manny” was a ranking member of the Black P-Stones, a gang that operated in and around the Denbigh section of Newport News. The sentencing covers crimes including the shooting, attempted murder, robberies, obstruction of justice and the sale of marijuana, according to a news release from the office of the U.S. District Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia.
The Williamsburg incident occurred in 2008, when Williams and other members of the group retaliated against a rival gang member who “exhibited disrespect” toward Williams’ girlfriend, according to the release. Several bullets were fired into the James City County house, damaging the living room and front door while two people were inside.
Williams and other members of the gang, which also went by the “P-Stone Bloods” and “Cobra Stones,” shot a rival gang member in broad-daylight on Warwick Boulevard in Newport News, according to the release. That person was shot twice and sustained injuries to his mouth, neck and shoulder.
He is also connected to shooting at another home where a rival gang member with whom the gang had an altercation lived. Several people were inside the home during the shooting, with one bullet almost striking someone, according to the release.
Williams was indicted in December. He pleaded guilty to one count of racketeering conspiracy and one count of possessing and discharging a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
The investigation was performed by the FBI’s Safe Streets Peninsula Task Force and was assisted by the James City County Police Department, the Newport News Police Department and the Virginia State Police.
