
Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools has announced the teachers of the year for the 2013-2014 school year.
Teachers were selected by their peers for hard work and leadership within their school communities.
At Tuesday’s school board meeting, Superintendent Steven Constantino recognized this year’s honored teachers. He said the Teacher of the Year program gives the division the chance to acknowledge those who are skilled, dedicated and who exhibit excellence in the classroom.
“These individuals exemplify WJCC’s core values through their contributions to students and the teaching profession,” he said.
The 2013-2014 Teachers of the Year are:
Elementary schools:
- Laura Wang, Bright Beginnings
- Diane Teh, Clara Byrd Baker
- Abby Reynolds, J. Blaine Blayton
- Mickie Meyer, Rawls Byrd
- Pat Chappell, James River
- Mary Carrol Whitley, Matoaka
- Jessica Capano, D.J. Montague
- Griselda Carlsen, Norge
- Amy Hicks, Stonehouse
- Kerry Armbruster, Matthew Whaley
Middle schools:
- Selena Chamblee, Berkeley
- Melissa Natter, Hornsby
- Anna Thomas, Toano
High Schools:
- Deborah MacDowell, Jamestown
- Termaine Hopkins, Lafayette
- Betty Nash, Warhill
Capano was named the district’s Elementary School Teacher of the Year, Thomas was recognized as the Middle School Teacher of the Year and MacDowell was chosen as High School Teacher of the Year.

Additionally, Christina Luntzer was named the regional and national Teacher of the Year in adapted physical education from the Society of Health and Physical Educators.
