internationalization conferenceA three-day conference at Colonial Williamsburg will explore the outlook of U.S. global competence.

The event will be hosted by The Coalition for International Education and the College of William & Mary’s Reves Center for International Studies. “Internationalization of U.S. Education in the 21st Century: The Future of International and Foreign Language Studies, A Research Conference on National Needs and Policy Implication” will be April 11 through the 13 at the Williamsburg Lodge.

According to a news release from the Reves Center, the U.S. faces an urgent education issue that will directly affect the nation’s well-being for generations to come.

At the conference, a team of national leaders will discuss the issue of global competence, which includes understanding of language and cultures of other nations and regions, as well as grasp of the role of the U.S. within the world today. Global competence teaches American cooperation and to meet modern challenges at home and abroad.

Speakers will discuss research results and consider recommendations for the future of international and foreign language studies. All are leaders in academia, education, business, government, and the NGO sectors.

“We are truly honored to have such an incredible group of professionals participate in this timely conference on the future of U.S. global competence,” said Stephen Hanson, vice provost for international affairs and William & Mary, in a news release.

Jon Huntsman Jr. will deliver one of the eight keynote speeches at 8 p.m. April 11. Huntsman is the former governor of Utah, ambassador to China and a 2012 presidential candidate. Also presenting will be former U.S. Rep. David Obey (Wisc.) — who served in the House of Representatives from 1969 to 2011 — and Kurt Kuehn, Chief Financial Officer of United Parcel Service.

Other speakers include:

  • Thomas Fingar, distinguished fellow in the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University, and former deputy director of National Intelligence for Analysis and chairman of the National Intelligence Council
  • Helena Kolenda, Program Director for Asia, Henry Luce Foundation
  • Anthony Jackson, Vice President of the Asia Society
  • Mark Rosenberg, President of Florida International University
