A 12-year-old Rawls Byrd student was taken off a school bus by police March 6 after they received reports he had shown a butterfly knife to other students.
Maj. Stephen Rubino of the James City County Police Department said school staff contacted police March 6 after finding out about the knife. The boy had allegedly showed it to students on the school bus March 5 and 6. Rubino described the knife, which was recovered, as a 4.75-inch tactical butterfly knife.
Police consulted with the Williamsburg-James City County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office at which point it was decided that juvenile intake would handle the boy’s case. Juvenile intake is a branch of the court system where potential charges against juveniles are analyzed to determine if they warrant formal charges or handling at that level, which often results in education rather than punishment.
The school was not placed on lockdown and nobody was hurt.
