I hope you enjoyed what is likely one of the last weekends of the year that felt like spring. The summer months approach, and with them come lots of fun events that we will cover each week in the notebook!
The York County Board of Supervisors had a meeting scheduled for Tuesday. Because they passed a budget last week, the meeting has been canceled and the items that would have been discussed have been pushed to their May 21 meeting.

Safety Town Registration Begins in One Week
Registration for Safety Town starts May 13. You can register from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays and from 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays at the Community Services Office in the York County Administration Building in Yorktown.

Parents will need to attend Safety Town with their children on the Friday of their week. On that day, children will receive a certificate of completion, a T-shirt, backpack and bicycle helmet.
Safety Town will be held on July 8 to 12, 15 to 19, 22 to 26 and 29 to August 2. You can find out more about Safety Town by clicking here.
Shady Area Rain Garden Presentation Begins Saturday at 11 a.m.
Jeanne Millin, a Virginia Master Gardener, will give a presentation Saturday at New Quarter Park where you can learn how a rain garden was built to capture runoff in a shaded area.
A rain garden allows for stormwater runoff to soak into the ground instead of flowing into storm drains or eroding land.
Millin will lead visitors along the park’s Teaching Garden Trail, which features a variety of native plants that grow well in shade and are tolerant of heat and drought. The rain garden filters stormwater runoff from the parking lot without damaging tree roots.
Participants will be able to explore the garden and ask questions about building rain gardens on their property.

Ceremonies will be held to honor the Africans who died on the voyage along with the enslaved survivors and their descendants.
The Middle Passage Ceremonies and Port Makers Project was founded to honor the millions of Africans who died in the transatlantic slave trade voyages. Ceremonies will be held and markers placed at 175 ports in North, Central and South America, the Caribbean and Europe.
