WILLIAMSBURG – The Williamsburg-James City County School Board will receive an update on the division’s redistricting process during tonight’s meeting, as officials continue work on new attendance zone maps.

Superintendent Daniel Keever is expected to attend tonight’s School Board meeting following community criticism over a June 1 comment to high school students during a redistricting discussion.

Students said Keever asked, “Wouldn’t you rather go to school with kids who look like you?” He later apologized at a town hall meeting and in a written statement, saying he took full responsibility.

“I recognize that comments I made during that conversation caused concern, frustration, and hurt for students, families, staff members and community members,” he stated. “I am deeply sorry, and I take full responsibility for my mistake.”

The redistricting steering committee released draft attendance zone maps for elementary, middle and high schools on May 12. Since then, the division has collected community feedback through public input sessions and other channels.

Administrators are expected to present recommended revisions based on that feedback, along with an updated timeline for the next phase of the process, according to agenda documents.

The board will also consider Virginia High School League memberships for Jamestown, Lafayette and Warhill high schools for the 2026-2027 school year, which provide insurance coverage and allow participation in VHSL athletics and activities.

The meeting will be held at Berkeley Middle School at 6:30 p.m.
