Fat Boys Cheesesteaks, a counter-style restaurant that offers the sandwiches and a variety of sides, will open March 1 on Richmond Road. The building is across the street from the Shops at High Street Williamsburg.
Owner John Majors said the restaurant shares a building with Legends Bar & Bistro and Black Angus Grille — also owned by Majors — and will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
“I decided to fill a niche,” Majors said. “There’s no cheesesteak restaurants in Williamsburg. We’re roasting rib-eyes, sliced thin, with all subs oven baked.”
Majors said there are successful cheesesteak restaurants in Newport News, so it was time to bring that style of dining to Williamsburg.
“I’m reacting to market forces,” Majors said. “It seems like counter service is the fastest growing [style].”
In addition to the sandwiches, Majors said the restaurant will serve lettuce wraps and salads. Sides include French fries, potato and artichoke salad, ginger lime cole slaw and sweet potato fries.
Combos featuring 11-inch subs will be priced around $12. Smaller sandwiches will also be available on Kaiser rolls. The dining room consists of wooden tables, and will be equipped with wi-fi and a television for customers.
The restaurant will be able to take online orders, and he hopes to eventually add a delivery component. Fat Boys Cheesesteaks will not serve alcohol, though eventually it may offer bottled beer.
Majors said he also recently changed the menu at Legends Bar & Bistro, adding a series of Asian entrees and a bar that features 36 brews on tap, including 34 craft beers.
