WILLIAMSBURG 一 Fifteen local students got a firsthand look at careers in health care this week as part of a summer career camp at Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center.

The program is a weeklong day camp that gives students the opportunity to explore health care career paths beyond the roles of doctors and nurses. Today,  rising eighth graders and high school freshmen in high school from local school districts learned about the job of a respiratory therapist.

The students learned about the education and training required to become a respiratory therapist while gaining hands-on experience with some of the tools used in the profession.

“It’s a really big opportunity to be here,” said David S., one of the students participating in the camp.

The camp also gives Sentara staff an opportunity to introduce students to careers in health care and encourage interest in the field.

“It means a lot to me to know that there will be someone there to take care of me when I need that help in the future,” said Tiffany Smith-Stokes, the regional manager of patient care services for education at Sentara Williamsburg and CarePlex Hospital in Hampton.
