WILLIAMSBURG— On Friday, Feb. 20, James City County held a ribbon-cutting for the official reopening of its Recreational Center pool after being closed for refurbishment.
“To all of you today, I say welcome. To all of our aquatic family and friends, I say welcome home. They were just as excited as we were the day the pool opened,” said Arlana Fauntleroy, James City County Director of Parks & Recreation, during the ribbon-cutting welcome remarks.
The pool was announced to receive these renovations to the indoor pool at the James City County Recreation Center, 5301 Longhill Road, last June, and began progress on June 16. After having celebrated its 40th anniversary, the county had said the improvements were necessary to ensure a safe and updated facility for patrons.
The pool was originally scheduled to open in November; however, due to complications and unforeseen issues, the project was delayed and only saw completion on Feb. 2.

Some of the upgrades to the facility include:
- Resurfaced pool deck
- New central drainage system
- Resurfaced interior pool bottom and tiling
- Raised pool ceiling
- Enhanced interior lighting
- Poolside showers
- Updated ADA accessible ramp and railing
- Improvements to the HVAC system
- Two poolside offices and storage space
“While we have had many upgrades in the building over the years, this is by far the largest renovation on the pool since it opened in 1987,” said Carla Brittle, the Tourism & Recreation Centers Administrator. She noted that outside of routine plastering, the pool had remained largely untouched before this renovation.
“Our board, I think, recognizes that this is a true jewel that our citizens really appreciate day in and day out,” said John McGlennon, member of the James City County Board of Supervisors.
The rec center is open Monday to Thursday from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. For more information, please visit the official page.
