James City County’s Animal Control Officers Seek Public’s Help in Animal Cruelty Investigation

JAMES CITY COUNTY— James City County Animal Control — staffed by sworn police officers who enforce state and local animal laws — is asking for the community’s assistance following the discovery of an injured and severely underweight dog.

On Feb. 16, officers responded to the 3300 block of Chickahominy Road for a report of a stray dog. The dog was safely captured and transported to an emergency veterinary clinic, where he required surgery to remove foreign objects from his stomach — items animals may ingest when starving.

According to the attending veterinarian, the dog is significantly underweight, has minimal muscle along his spine and hips, and shows a highly arched spinal cord, likely the result of being kept in a crate that was too small. He is estimated to be approximately two years old, appears to be a Terrier/Pit mix, and was found without a collar, microchip, or tattoo. Notably, his nails were neatly trimmed.

The dog is now safe and receiving care at Heritage Humane Society.

Anyone who recognizes this dog or has information about a possible owner is urged to contact authorities. This case is part of an active animal‑cruelty investigation, and even small details may be critical.

“We have received an increase in calls for service by the public regarding the abuse and neglect of animals that may not have been recognized previously.  Through the statements made by members of our community, this unit has investigated crimes ranging from unlawful tethering and long term improper kenneling to starvation and outright negligence. It is through this collaboration and the support of the public that we are able to effectively advocate for animals in need.  If you see an animal that you believe is not treated correctly, please reach out to our unit,” Sgt. Tony Quiros, Animal Control Supervisor for James City County Police, said.

Individuals with information are asked to contact Sgt. Quiros at 757‑565‑0370, Crime Line at 1‑888‑LOCK‑U‑UP, submit a tip online at P3TIPS.COM, or use the P3TIPS smartphone app.

Callers may remain anonymous and are not required to testify in court. Tips that lead to an arrest, the recovery of drugs, or stolen property may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,500.
