York County shooting investigation leads to murder arrest

WILLIAMSBURG — A 20-year-old Williamsburg man has been charged with murder in connection with the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man earlier this month, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded at about 9:50 p.m. Aug. 7 to the 100 block of Emma Rose Court for a report of gunshots. They found Caleb Zecharia Cotman, 18, suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest.

A Sheriff’s Office deputy provided medical aid before Cotman was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Sheriff’s Office investigators conducted an investigation and obtained warrants for Jayquone Lee Jones, 20, of Williamsburg.

Jones was taken into custody Aug. 24 at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

He is charged with murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Jones remains incarcerated at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
