YORK COUNTY — The Virginia Peninsulas Public Service Authority (VPPSA) Compost Facility has been temporarily shut down due to a fire.
Chief Stephen Kopczynski of the York County Department of Fire and Life Safety (YCFLS) told WYDaily that the department received a call just before 6:30 a.m. today (Saturday, Jan. 8). Upon arrival at the VPPSA Compost Facility, located at 145 Goodwin Neck Rd. in Yorktown, crews determined the fire to be in an area of the facility where leaves are stored for compositing.
YCFLS, along with the assistance of crews and a water tanker from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue (AVFR), as well as crews from VPPSA and heavy equipment, were able to contain the fire to that specific part of the facility.
As of 11:20 a.m., the AVFR reports having shuttled 133,000 gallons of water to the scene with 57,000 gallons used by its Tanker 3.
Chief Kopczynski said that crews remain on the scene to monitor the fire.
According to a post from the York County Government’s Facebook page, the VPPSA Compost Facility closed earlier today due to the fire and will remain as such until Monday (Jan. 10). On that day, the facility is scheduled to reopen at 8 a.m.
WYDaily will continue to keep you up-to-date on this developing story as more information becomes available.
