WILLIAMSBURG — Over the past four seasons, Providence Classical School’s Coach Jamal Oweis has been building a boys basketball program for the Williamsburg private school.
Providence Classical School opened in 2001 and is a private Christian school that teaches grades Kindergarten through 12.
Its boys basketball team, which consists mostly of 8th-grade middle schoolers, has shown a lot of growth and progress since Oweis started the program.
“This is the fourth year that Providence has had basketball and we have had a lot of turnover — students leave for various reasons, so the hardest thing has been continuity,” Oweis said. “But, if all of this year’s 8th graders stay, then they will graduate and Providence have a JV team next year.”
Winning its first six games was an impressive feat for the Providence Patriots.
Oweis explained how his team was able to hold one opponent scoreless through the first three quarters of a game, “That’s a pretty impressive feat and is the highlight of the season, so far.”
The team plays at Quarterpath Recreational Center, with the season ending Feb. 6.
“The team, as a whole, has really done well. We only have two remaining players from last year and so, it has been pretty amazing to do as well as we have done,” states Oweis proudly.
