NEWPORT NEWS — For the second straight season, a Christopher Newport University offensive lineman has been named All-American. Amaan Miller became the 13th CNU football standout to achieve All-American status on Thursday when he was named third team All-America by D3football.com. Just last season, Josh Hartley received a second team All-America honor from the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).

Miller, from Newport News, was a first team All-Region selection as well as first team All-Conference honoree in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC). He concluded his career this fall by starting all ten games for the Captains, and played in 43 games in his outstanding career, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2023.

“Amaan has been one of the most consistent and reliable linemen in the history of our program,” Head Coach Paul Crowley, a former offensive lineman himself, said Thursday. “More importantly, Amaan has always represented CNU football the right way, on and off the field. I am extremely happy for him as well as his teammates who helped him achieve this great honor.”

Miller led an offensive line that produced 30 rushing touchdowns and averaged 181 yards per game this season on the ground. The Captains concluded the 2024 season with a 7-3 record and a 5-1 mark in the NJAC.

Miller this season became the ninth CNU football standout to be named first team All-Region by D3football.com, and the first since defensive lineman Ben James in 2019. CNU’s first football All-American was also an offensive lineman, center Tommy Fitzgerald, who was honored by the AFCA in 2004. Two other offensive linemen, Larry Broach and Matt Boykin, received All-America status in 2006.

Prior to Hartley’s nod last year, Christopher Newport’s most recent All-American honor had come in 2019 when defensive lineman Ben James received the accolade. Other Captains to reach the high honor include linebacker Justin Wood in 2005, defensive back Rob Rodriguez and running back Roland Hilliard in 2006, running back Tunde Ogun in 2008, returner Kentel Noel in 2010, and defensive back Justus Drakeford in 2017.

The Christopher Newport University football program began play in the 2001 season, and the Captains have compiled a record of 149-92 (.618). Crowley’s squad will begin its 25th season of action in September.
