WILLIAMSBURG — During its December meeting, the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority (HTRFA) voted to officially name the new complex the Greater Williamsburg Sports and Events Center.
The City of Williamsburg, James City County and York County have partnered to build
and operate the 200,000-square-foot regional sports center through the Historic Triangle Recreational Facilities Authority on approximately 62.9 acres adjacent to the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center in the City of Williamsburg.
The HTRFA board voted unanimously to formally add “Greater” to the facility name during the meeting, which also included operational and construction updates on the facility.
The building is approximately 20% complete and is on pace to be finalized by August 2026, stated Construction Manager Todd Walker.
A General Manager applicant review committee was formed to allow HTRFA to move forward in the hiring of a general manager.
The group currently has three qualified, vetted applicants (from 27 total applicants) and hopes to fill that role in January 2025.
There are currently 19 committed events scheduled, with an additional eight dates awaiting contracts — some slated as early as late 2026.
“Right now we have eight (scheduled) in 2026 and the remainder in 2027,” stated John Di Meglio of KemperSports, which is managing the facility. “2026 is going to be a little bit of a condensed period with mid-year opening and giving ourselves a little bit of a cushion to make sure everything is on pace. If we continue at this booking pace and timelines, we will get a little more aggressive once we are certain construction will meet that.”
