HISTORIC TRIANGLE – Drivers across the Historic Triangle are getting a bit of relief at the pump as gas prices continue to edge downward, mirroring a statewide decline driven by lower crude oil prices and the end of peak summer travel.
According to AAA, the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline dropped from $4.09 to $4.06, and crude oil prices have decreased “in the $70 per barrel range amid optimism that the Strait of Hormuz will resume normal operations.”
Virginia is one of many states with an average gas price below $4 per gallon. The AAA’s gas prices tracker reports that the state’s average is approximately $3.81 as of Aug. 10, which is roughly 10 cents lower than a week prior.
According to Ryan Adcock, AAA Tidewater Virginia’s public relations specialist, the Hampton Roads area’s gas average is generally higher during the summer, but sits below the state average during the rest of the year.
“During the summer, you have tourists and residents needing gas,” he explained. “During ‘regular’ times, after the summer ends, it’s mainly residents needing gas.”
Sara Krum, a realtor from Richmond who does business in Williamsburg, said she’s had to reevaluate her budget as gas prices have increased.
“You have to take a look at the food budget, travel budget and take cuts elsewhere as a result,” she said.
Gas prices in the Historic Triangle currently range from $3.49 to $4.19.
In James City County, Exxon on Capitol Landing Road, 7-Eleven on John Tyler Highway and Wawa on Ironbound Rd have regular gas for $3.67.
In York County, Walmart Fuel Station on George Washington Memorial Highway has regular gas for $3.49, and Sam’s Club on Jefferson Ave has regular gas for $3.57, though the latter requires a membership card.
