JAMES CITY COUNTY — A 16-year-old has been charged in a shooting incident Saturday at the Country Village Mobile Home Park in James City County that damaged a home.
According to the James City County Police Department, on Oct. 19 at approximately 1:38 p.m., it responded to a report of a shooting in the 100 block of Gray Gables Drive within the Country Village Mobile Home Park. Police said the shooting allegedly followed a verbal altercation between a group of four juveniles and one adult male. The parties involved are believed to be known to each other.
Police added that during the confrontation, one of the four juveniles brandished a handgun and fired multiple rounds in the direction of the adult. No injuries were reported, but an occupied dwelling was struck by gunfire prior to the group fleeing the area.
Officers responded, secured the scene, and initiated a search for the juveniles, police said. A York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office K-9 was deployed to assist in locating both the offender and the firearm used in the incident. By the evening, officers successfully identified and located all involved individuals, including the 16-year-old male who is alleged to have fired the weapon.
While multiple shell casings were recovered from the scene, the firearm has yet to be recovered, police said. The 16-year-old suspect was detained in the vicinity of the shooting and questioned by detectives before being charged with the following offenses: Reckless Handling of a Firearm, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, Underage Possession of a Firearm, Shooting into an Occupied Dwelling.
The suspect was transported to the Merrimac Juvenile Detention Center. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional charges may be forthcoming, police said.
