The executive director of Avalon: A Center for Women and Children has been named to the Virginia Sexual and Domestic Violence Program Professional Standards Committee.

Teresa Christin was selected by the Virginia Advisory Committee on Sexual and Domestic Violence to join her new colleagues in a statewide effort to establish professional standards that support and inform programs across the commonwealth.

The committee’s primary focus is establishing “accreditation standards and procedures by which local sexual and domestic violence programs can be systematically measured and evaluated,” according to a recent news release from Avalon.

Christin’s work at Avalon, which provides shelter and support to those experiencing domestic violence and sexual assault in the Greater Williamsburg area, and her passion for improving the organizational systems and services for nonprofits led to her appointment to the committee.

In addition to her past three years at the head of Avalon, Christin has also served as the chairwoman of the Advisory Board of the Department of Human Services in James City County.

“I am eager to work with others to improve and strengthen all of these agencies that do this very important work,” Christin said.
