Progress continues on the George Washington Highway (Route 17) widening project in York County, with the second phase of the initiative expected to wrap up in the coming weeks.
So far in Phase II, crews have finished surface paving from AMF York Lanes Bowling Alley to Washington Square Shopping Center and Oriana Road/Lakeside Drive, according to a recent press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation.
Workers have also finished the construction and paving of entrances, as well as permanent striping and sign installation in the Phase II area. The second phase of the project is expected to finish in the coming weeks before moving on to the third.
Phase III will focus on the area from Washington Square Shopping Center to north of Wolf Trap Road, and it will include ongoing signalization activities, milling and paving operations, storm sewer pipe and water service installations, curb and gutter installation and construction of center medians. The roadwork will cause daytime single-lane closures between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Motorists are reminded to obey the work zone speed limit, stay alert, avoid distractions and pay attention to road signs and highway flaggers when traveling through this and other work zones throughout Hampton Roads.
