Mission BBQ to give free sandwiches on 9/11 to first responders at all restaurant locations

Mission BBQ will give away free sandwiches to first responders, including fire personnel and police officers on Tuesday to commemorate the anniversary of Sept. 11.

The free offering will be from 11 am. to 9 p.m. at all Mission BBQ locations, including Newport NewsHampton, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. These Hampton Roads locations will also have a live vocal performances of the national anthem.

“It’s a really touching event.”said Amanda McLaughlin, general manager of the Mission BBQ store in Newport News.

The restaurant chain, with locations on the East Coast, is known for American patriotism and of course, barbecue. Every day at noon, the stores play a recording of the national anthem.

The company also gives discounts or free meals to various service members on holidays and special occasions, such as Veteran’s Day and 9/11.

“Our mission is to serve those who serve us,” McLaughlin said.

On Sept 11, several police cars and fire trucks will be parked at the Newport News and Hampton stores. McLaughlin said SWAT team, K-9 units and military vehicles may also be there.

Stephen Bryant, a fire medic who is still in the academy, will be singing the national anthem live at noon. Jeremiah Harriston, a narcotics officer, is the alternate vocalist.

“It’s a big day of saying thank you,” McLaughlin said.
