VIRGINIA BEACH — Amazon and Whole Foods Market announced Wednesday the launch of grocery pickup beginning here and in Sacramento.
More cities will be added to the list throughout the year, according to the companies. Curbside grocery pickup is a feature that Walmart, Kroger and other grocers have been expanding to make shopping more convenient and boost sales.
Customers can now shop Whole Foods Market selection of fresh and organic produce, bakery, dairy, meat and seafood, floral and everyday staples and pickup their order in as little as 30 minutes, all without leaving their car, according to a news release.

“Pickup from Whole Foods Market is a perfect option for customers who want to grab healthy and organic groceries at their convenience, all without leaving their car,” said Stephenie Landry, worldwide vice president of Prime Now, AmazonFresh and Amazon Restaurants. “A customer can order at 5 p.m., pick up at 5:30 p.m., and we’ll have their groceries loaded into their car just minutes after arrival. For an even faster experience, customers can tell us they are on their way using the Prime Now app and groceries will be ready as they arrive.”
Here’s how it works: Prime members place their order via the Prime Now app and choose the pickup option at checkout. Customers can choose free pickup in as little as an hour on orders of $35, or in 30 minutes for $4.99.
After arriving at the Whole Foods Market store, customers park in a reserved pick-up spot and a Prime Now shopper will place groceries into their car within minutes.
For customers who tell the grocer they are on their way in the Prime Now app, groceries will be ready as they arrive.
In addition to grocery pickup, Prime members in dozens of cities can enjoy “ultrafast” grocery delivery from Whole Foods Market.
Prime members can also voice shop with Alexa by adding Whole Foods Market groceries to their Prime Now cart. This feature makes it simple for the whole family to get the items they need, customers simply say, “Alexa, add eggs to my Whole Foods cart,” and when ready they place their order and checkout using the Prime Now app.
According to the news release, all Prime members shopping Whole Foods Market will receive 10 percent off hundreds of sale items and discounts on select popular products whether they shop in-store, choose pick-up or delivery via Prime Now.
