After nearly four years as Virginia’s lieutenant governor, Ralph Northam is projected to take the 2017 Virginia gubernatorial election, according to both NBC and CNN.
Democratic candidate Northam took 53.9 percent of the vote in Virginia Tuesday with 99.84 percent of precincts reporting, according to Virginia Department of Elections results.
While election results poured in statewide, voters from across the Historic Triangle cast nearly 60,000 collective votes on Election Day.
James City and York counties chose Ed Gillespie (R) for governor, while the City of Williamsburg voted for Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam, according to the election website.
Local results: Gillespie vs. Northam for governor
Gillespie won James City County with 50.11 percent of the vote, pulling in 371 more votes than Northam. Gillespie also took York County with 55.1 percent of the vote, with 2,633 more votes than Northam, according to the elections results.
Northam won Williamsburg with 70.67 percent of the vote, receiving 2,234 more votes than Gillespie, the elections website said.
Local results: Lieutenant governor and attorney general
With 100 percent of precincts reporting, voters in James City and York counties chose Republican candidate Sen. Jill Vogel (R) for the lieutenant governor race, and Republican John Adams (R) for state attorney general, according to election results.
Vogel took 52.7 percent of the vote in James City County and 58.09 percent of the vote in York County, respectively. Vogel took 1,779 more votes in James City County than Fairfax, and 3,739 more votes in York County.
Adams took nearly 52.63 percent of the vote in James City County and 57.63 percent of the vote in York County. Adams took 1,691 more voted than Herring in James City County, and 3,539 more votes than Herring in York County.
In Williamsburg, voters chose Fairfax and Herring for lieutenant governor and attorney general respectively, the elections website said.
Fairfax won Williamsburg with 2,061 more votes than Vogel for a total of 69.61 percent of the vote in the city.
Herring won Williamsburg by larger margins than Fairfax with 2,143 more votes than Adams for a total of 70.42 percent of the vote in the city.
However, statewide, Vogel and Adams had fallen behind their Democratic opponents at 10:33 p.m., according to the elections website.
Vogel’s opponent, Justin Fairfax (D), had a 138,883 vote lead statewide at 10:33 p.m., the elections website said.
Adams’ opponent, (I) Mark Herring (D), had a 168,409 vote lead statewide at 10:33 p.m., according to the elections website.
