Newport News man arrested, charged with attempted bank robbery

A man suspected of attempting to rob a Wells Fargo bank in York County Tuesday morning was arrested Friday, police say.

According to a news release from the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office, 27-year-old Ryan Yates of Newport News was arrested and charged with attempted robbery and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony Friday.

The arrest came as a result of “several Crime Line Tips and great police work,” the release stated.

“Sheriff Diggs thanks everyone for sharing these posts and for the tips that helped identify this suspect,” read the release.

Police say Yates entered a Wells Fargo branch, located at 110 Ottis Street, at 10:33 a.m. Tuesday. He passed a note to a bank employee demanding money, then took the note back. He did not display a weapon, police said.

In the surveillance photo provided by police, Yates wore a black baseball cap, sunglasses and a blue hooded sweatshirt during the attempted robbery.

Police believe he left the scene of the attempted robbery in an older model gold Nissan Maxima or Nissan Altima.

Yates is scheduled to appear in York General District Court April 19.
