A 21-year-old James City County man was taken to Riverside Behavioral Health Center in Hampton Monday afternoon after threatening his mother and two sisters with a knife, police say.
James City County Police responded to a house on Lafayette Boulevard around 3 p.m. Monday in response to a report of an armed subject, James City County Police Department spokeswoman Stephanie Williams said.
The 21-year-old man’s mother told police her son had a knife and threatened to kill her and her two daughters, both of whom are adults, Williams said.
During the incident, each victim locked themselves in different rooms in the house while the man attempted to enter the rooms, continuing to verbally threaten the women, police said.
When police arrived, they took the man into custody on an emergency custody order due to concerns about mental illness, Williams said.
There were no injuries from the incident.
According to Virginia Code, an emergency custody order is issued when there is probable cause to believe that a person has mental illness that may result in harm to themselves or others.
Later, a magistrate issued a temporary detention order and the man was transported to Riverside Behavioral Health for medical attention, Williams said.
Police are not releasing the man’s name because he has not been charged with any crimes.
