With 53 percent of the vote, Republican Rocky Holcomb will fill the vacant seat in the Virginia House of Delegates, representing the 85th district in Virginia Beach.

Holcomb is a United States Marines Corps veteran and a 25-year Virginia Beach Sheriff’s Office veteran who focused his campaign on job creation, education, middle income families and transportation.

Democratic candidate Cheryl Turpin earned 47 percent of the 6,240 votes cast. The most recent United States Census Bureau data from 2015 estimates Virginia Beach’s population to be 452,745.

The special election became necessary when Representative Scott Taylor was elected to Congress in November.

“I’d like to thank the good voters of the 85th district for putting their support and trust in me,” Holcomb said. “I understand that I work for the people and that people don’t work for me … I’m going to make constituent services my number one priority.”

Holcomb said he will get sworn in Wednesday.
