Welcome to Southside Daily’s weekly look at the top girls soccer teams by record in Virginia Beach, and a peak ahead at what’s next on their schedule:
First Colonial (10-0): The Patriots’ young and talented front line continues to dazzle (5.4 goals per game), while their defense is quietly staggering. The back line, anchored by Marlee McClendon, Kylie Goad and Reagan Tate, along with freshman keeper Chelsea Mojica, have recorded six straight shutouts, including one against a talented Tallwood attack.
Kellam (9-1-1): The Knights have had arguably the toughest schedule among Beach teams and still rattled off nine straight wins. Coach Mario Hurdle’s club has won by blowouts (four wins by 3+ goals) and dogfights (four wins by one goal). Kellam hasn’t lost since mid-March (1-0 to Chantilly) and puts its streak on the line against First Colonial on Friday.
Tallwood (7-2-1): Only in the loaded Coastal Conference can a team’s second league game be considered a must to win or tie. The Lions fell into that situation after being shutout for the first time all year Tuesday against First Colonial. Tallwood faces the daunting task of trying to rebound quickly on Friday against a hot Falcons team. The Lions can’t afford to fall to 0-2 in conference play this early.
Cox (7-4): The Falcons have shaken out of their early season woes with a seven-game winning streak. The Davidson sister duo of Alex (seven goals) and Ryanne (15 goals) has powered an offense back to prominence (6 goals per game in their past six wins), while Cox’s defense has allowed just five goals in the last seven games. Cox plays Tallwood Friday.
Landstown (6-4): The Eagles had won six straight by a combined score of 26-2 before a heartbreaking loss to Kellam in the final minute last week and a 4-0 loss to Cox on Wednesday. Landstown has averaged 5.5 goals in six wins but has mustered just one goal in its four losses. The Eagles get a conference battle and a chance to bounce back Friday against Ocean Lakes.
- Bishop Sullivan (9-5-1) — The Crusaders have won six of their last seven games by a 23-7 margin.
- Ocean Lakes (6-6) — The Dolphins snapped a three-game losing streak with a 3-0 win Tuesday against Bayside.
