Before she lost her battle with ovarian cancer, Karene O’Hare volunteered hours of her time to Lackey Free Clinic.
Now an annual race in her honor continues to support the clinic and its ovarian cancer testing for uninsured and underinsured area women.
Karene’s husband John, who heads up the Karene O’Hare Ovarian Cancer Memorial Fund and was also a longtime Lackey volunteer, presented the center with a $10,000 grant Dec. 15, the proceeds from September’s run.
In the six years of the event, donations to Lackey Free Clinic have totaled $57,000.
In addition to ovarian cancer testing, funds support clinic education initiatives.
The race, which is called the Hare and Tortoise 8k Run/Walk, benefits Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center as well.
