What Yule Do: Holiday Events for Dec. 17-21

2014-12-16 20.58.10This week marks the start of Hanukkah and the last weekend before Christmas. Spend it strolling Merchants Square or taking in holiday history at Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center.

Every week through Christmas, WYDaily will compile a list of upcoming holiday events in the area.

This week’s events are:

Entertainment

This is the last week to catch live music in New Town on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings. Performing groups include the Williamsburg United Methodist Church Ringers, Wellspring United Methodist Choir and the Hysterically Correct Carolers. Click here for a full roster of musicians and a times.

Holiday entertainment is throughout the streets of Merchants Square. This week it is a 30-minute production of A Christmas Carol at 5 p.m. Friday; 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday; and 12:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. Sunday. Father Christmas will be strolling the square from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Saturday and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

For Families

Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center will host “A Colonial Christmas” for a look at 17th- and 18th-century holiday traditions. Special tours and interpretive programs run through Jan. 4. Learn more about programs here.

The Muscarelle Museum of Art will offer free admission Sunday afternoon when Santa comes to visit. The Williamsburg Youth Chorale will perform as well, as part of the museum’s Music in the Gallery series, starting at 2:30 p.m.

Holiday Reading

Wilford Kale, local award-winning author and former James City County supervisor, will sign copies of his “A Very Virginia Christmas” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the William & Mary Bookstore. With stories and traditions from the Shenandoah Valley to the Eastern Shore, the book earned a gold medal from the Independent Publisher Book Awards last year.
