Dig into the history of Historic Jamestowne at its Archaeology Day on Saturday.
In line with Virginia Archaeology Month, special programs will run throughout the day, including tours, interactive lessons and special children’s activities.
Scheduled programs:
- The Buried Truth: Jamestown Rediscovery archaeologists will highlight the finds made this season at the historic site
- Native Foodways of the Chesapeake: Demonstrations of Algonquian cooking and foodways
- “our established friendship with the Naturalls:” Learn about the early relationship between colonists and Virginia Indians through re-enactors portraying Aquintan, one of Pocahontas’ brothers and Edward Brewster, captain of the guard at James Fort
- Artifact Adventures at the Archaearium: See how artifacts go from the field to the exhibit, and assist archaeologists in sorting material to find animal bones, shell and seeds for clues to fort life in the 17th century
Tours offered:
- The History of Archaeology at Jamestown, 10:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.: A ranger-led tour discussing the journey from early to modern archaeological practice and Jamestown’s role in the development of historic archaeology
- Archaeologist Walking Tour, 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.: An in-depth tour of the 1607 fort site with an archaeologist presenting on this season’s excavations
In addition, the Jamestown Glasshouse of 1608 will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday for visitors to learn about the glass industry’s role in Jamestown’s history.
Glassblowers will demonstrate the Italian glass techniques and the making of 17th-century German-style drinking vessels. Guests can create a design for glassblowers to realize and participate in a raffle for prizes.
Archaeology Day events are free with paid Historic Jamestowne admission, which is $14 for adults and includes access to Yorktown Battlefield. Youth under age 16 can enter for free. For more information, visit the Historic Jamestowne website or call 229-4497.
