Event: Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment Program

Often, the best way to prevent an escalation of alcohol and drug misuse is through a conversation with a trusted health care provider. Using motivational interviewing and conversational counseling, doctors, nurse practitioners and physician assistants can guide people to techniques for lessening consumption or determine if additional help is needed. It’s called the Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment program.
The SBIRT program screens people for substance misuse through a screening questionnaire and by using primary care doctors and nurses to guide the conversation. This way, any issues are caught now rather than later, and it just takes a few minutes.
You can get involved. A free training for this program is being offered at Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg, and sponsored by the Williamsburg Health Foundation, The Pavilion and The Farley Center at Williamsburg Place and the Alcohol and Aging Awareness Group and VA ABC. It’s open to health care providers, as well as interested community members.
